JGU is an international research university of worldwide recognition. This reputation comes thanks to its outstanding individual researchers as well as extraordinary research achievements in the fields of particle and hadron physics, materials sciences, translational medicine, life sciences, media disciplines, and historical cultural studies.
JGU has demonstrated its research prowess during the German Universities Excellence Initiative by the German federal and state governments where PRISMA received funding as a Cluster of Excellence and the Graduate School of Excellence MAINZ received further funding. Moreover, two Research Centers and nine Research Units represent the university’s strongest areas of research.
During the first stage of the Excellence Initiative by the German federal and state governments of 2007, the Gutenberg Research College (GRC) was established – a central strategic tool to promote top-level research and interdisciplinary connections between areas of top-level research at JGU. The GRC’s interdisciplinary Executive Committee provides advice to the President of JGU on strategic issues.
As Rhineland Palatinate’s hub of academic research, JGU has strong links to regional, national and international partners in research, culture and industry, such as the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz, the Roman-Germanic Central Museum (RGZM), the GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt, the Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) and the Max Planck Institutes for Chemistry and Polymer Research.
JGU supports early career researchers in gaining scientific independence and visibility. Besides giving advice and assistance regarding applications for third-party funding by, among others, the EU or the German Research Foundation (DFG), JGU also provides internal funds through its Internal University Research Funding Scheme (“Stufe 1”). Here, early career researchers can, for instance, apply for travel grants to actively participate in international events, printing costs grants and funds to promote networking activities. Contact point for these matters is the Department for Research and Technology Transfer at JGU.
